‘Investing in a safer tomorrow’ – a global maritime safety competition

The Nautical Institute Hong Kong branch is supporting the MPPF and other maritime organisations in Hong Kong to promote the maritime safety competition ‘Investing in a safer tomorrow’. This is a global competition organised by the UK P & I Club, and the winning team or individual can receive USD30,000, with USD15,000 for 2nd place and USD5,000 for 3rd place. The competition is open to 18 to 30 year olds, people embarking on a career at sea or in the maritime industry ashore already, or maritime students. Teams of up to 4, or individuals, are requested to propose an improvement to any element of safety at sea, this could be seafarer wellbeing, or an invention to improve physical safety or navigation etc.

Hong Kong competition : As part of the Global competition, a competition is first being held in Hong Kong, for two groups : the public, and students. The Champion of each category will receive HKD5,000, 2nd place HKD3,000 and 3rd place HKD2,000.

The initial stage is to just provide the idea and initial overview of the concept by the 1st November 2018. There is no need to provide a final product or concept. After interviews to assess the concepts, the winners of the Hong Kong competition will be selected by the judging panel, and an award ceremony held on 24th November as part of Hong Kong Maritime Week.

Global competition : All of the proposals from Hong Kong have the opportunity to be put forward to be judged by the Global competition panel with other entrants from around the world. Several proposals from around the world will then be selected and each will then have an additional four months to work and develop their concept to the final submission. Those selected will have mentoring from the U K P & I Club through this development stage. The winners will then be presented at a ceremony in London at the Maritime Museum on 20th June 2019.
